Shawshank Circles

"Geology is the study of pressure and time,” per Red in Shawshank Redemption, “That's all it takes, really, pressure and time." We think a little heat might help as well, but these pieces are a study in geology and all it really takes is pressure, time, and some heat. Using a process partially developed here at Rittenhouse Studio and building on the expertise of Nathan Sandberg, we use Red’s wisdom to literally force thick glass to become thin. Most of these one foot diameter circles are translucent and look great with light behind them.

Shawshank Circles commissioned by expert interior designer Dina Spaidal for a residential installation (pottery shown also by Rittenhouse Studio).
